TEHRAN, May 28 (MNA) -- Professor Hussein Pur-Ahmadi said here Tuesday that the fact that the United Arab Emirates’ claim to three of Iran’s Persian Gulf islands is mentioned in the final statement of the Arab League summit will allow the United States to a establish a new front against Iran.
Pur-Ahmadi told the Mehr News Agency that the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) has discussed the UAE’s claims to Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs ever since its establishment, but this was a new issue at the Arab League summit.
Pur-Ahmadi said that over the past few years the UAE has been trying to convince Europe to get involved in the issue, adding that it is unlikely that Europe will do so due to the dialogue between Europe and Iran.
He stressed that the Arabs themselves do not have a common position on the issue and that is why the UAE is trying to convince the European Union to become involved.
Although it was mentioned in the final statement of the Arab League summit, all Arab countries were not in full agreement on the issue, he noted.
Pur-Ahmadi said that Iran made a huge mistake by asking to join the Arab League as an observer, adding that it would be more constructive for Iran to hold discussions with Turkey and other regional powers.
He also noted that most Arab countries are opposed to the idea of Iran joining the Arab League as an observer.
He said that the final statement of the Arab League summit showed that Arab countries are not in favor of Iran joining the organization and even regard Iran as an occupier.
Pur-Ahmadi went on to say that the UAE has been pursuing the issue for 20 years and intends to refer the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
In conclusion, he said that some Arab countries like Saudi Arabia have announced that an international institution should not be allowed to issue a ruling since the issue involves two Islamic states.
